Neonicotinoid Pesticides and Pollinators
A Webinar with Dan Raichel
Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC)
Thursday, February 25th, 7pm
Bees are a keystone species that play a critical role in pollinating our food crops and wild plants. Worldwide, bee populations are in decline. As massive numbers of bees and other pollinators keep dying across the globe, studies connect these deaths to neonicotinoid pesticides, also known as Neonics.
Dan Raichel, Staff Attorney, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), will explain what is known about the devastating effects of Neonics on bees domestic and wild and the cascading effects throughout the ecosystem. He will discuss their use in agriculture and home garden products and talk about “The Birds and Bees Protection Act” a bill in the NY State Legislature to ban the use of this class of pesticides in NY State for five years to allow further study of their effects. This bill, if passed, could serve as a model for the rest of the country. He will also discuss the economics of neonic treated seeds in agriculture.
